Cite a Dissertation for Referencing

Not all students can cite a dissertation whenever they use an external document for researching. Actually, citing your resource materials is one of the major tasks that you need to adhere to because it can produce not so desirable results if you fail to cite your referenced materials. Most of the time, those files that were not cited can be considered plagiarized and you wouldn’t want that to happen. So how do we cite a dissertation?

The first thing that you need to understand is that you must have an idea how to cite a dissertation. It is important that you have some knowledge about styles in citing. For example, there are at least three major citation styles that you can use, namely APA, MLA and Harvard. These styles are widely recognized. You can easily learn how to use them and apply them to your biology dissertation or law thesis paper.

When citing any source materials, the in-text citation is probably the most evident thing that you have actually recognized the contents of another file. This is fairly easy and you only need a few steps to do it. All you should do is to capture the exact words, sentences or phrases of another document and integrate them into your own dissertation. Any chapters of dissertation can be intenerated with the cited section. After that, you need to enclose the whole segment in quotation marks. Then you can put the author’s name and the page number or the publishing date, depending on the citation style, and enclose them in parentheses. Take a look at the example below:

“The most interesting thing about Lord of the Rings is that it gives more excitement to understand ‘good versus evil’” (Smith, 2005).

Of course, to cite a dissertation does not end in in-text citation. You also need to write a bibliography page where you will list all materials that you have used for the dissertation writing project. You need to include details like author’s name, year of publication, title of the article, publishing company, city of publication and sometimes pages and edition number. You can list the entries in alphabetical order. If you wish to take a look at a dissertation example, go to our Samples section.
