Dissertation Reference Guide

Before you can start writing a dissertation paper, you need to first realize what referencing really means. A dissertation reference process involves citing your resource materials. It means you have to make sure that the details in your work are acquired from reliable sources. When you reference, you are actually recognizing the contributions of other papers to your dissertation. Therefore, it is always necessary for you to know how to properly reference in writing a research paper. For this post, we will give you the basics about referencing and citations.

What are the formats and style in referencing? Referencing allows you to use at least three of the most popular citation schemes. These are the APA, Harvard and MLA formats. Actually, they are all the same but the scope of interest may be different. For example, you may use the APA format for topics involving science and technology. On the other hand, the MLA format is suitable for humanities and other related topics. Harvard can be used in any topics of papers.

How do we cite and reference articles? The referencing process takes only about a few hours to learn. Depending on the style that you wish to apply, you need to follow specific instructions in doing citations. However, they are all very similar so this should not be a problem. There are three procedures involved in applying citation styles. Let us tackle the first one, which is in-text citation. This process involves the integration of another paper’s parts to your dissertation. You can enclose the phrase or sentence in quotation marks. Afterward, put the authors name and the publishing year or the page number.

Formatting of the paper. Actually, this is not included in the process of referencing. However, your entire paper format should follow the instructions of the style. In most cases, the pages should have a one-inch margin on both sides. The sentences should be on a double spaced format. Lastly, the page numbers must be at the upper right hand corner of each page. You need to include your last name for MLA or the title of your work for the APA format.

One more thing that you need to accomplish in dissertation reference is the creation of the bibliography page. This part is included in the last section of the dissertation. It contains a list of all the reference materials you have used for the research. The APA and MLA formats require the same details like author’s name, publication year, title of the article, publishing company, city of publication and page numbers.
