An introduction to writing good management dissertations.
Perhaps you realized today that you have a management dissertation due tomorrow. Maybe you haven’t even started it. Although you might be panicking right now, remember that this task is not impossible, and can prove less than arduous with the right amount of planning and guidance.
Some general tips to help with your creation of this new dissertation:
- Make an outline. As with all works of writing, you want to make an outline that you can refer back to in order to keep your paper on track. This is a necessary part of every paper-writing process, and you will be glad to have a framework when you get to the writing process. Also, doing an outline a few days in advance keeps your mind on the project and prevents utter procrastination.
- Buy an example paper. Lots of websites offer example papers, including Dissertation Blog. Having someone with which to collaborate makes composing a dissertation of any kind much easier. Management dissertations are no exception.
- Bird by Bird. Most people are familiar with this adage, meaning to complete a task methodically and diligently, in pieces to overcome great obstacles. This applies here as well.
But the management dissertation is a rare animal indeed. Unlike, for instance, liberal arts theses, management dissertations do not offer very much leeway in style, tone, and topic.
Here are some super quick tips to help you achieve a strong management thesis. They are not very complicated ideas, but they will be infinitely beneficial to any person working in that field.
- Answer a specific question. Especially when you are working with management topics, you want to make sure your thesis and thesis statement answer a specific question. Being too broad in your ideas can result in a poorly constructed dissertation. With a non-literature topic like this one, structure is everything.
- Consider your stance. Your stance on whatever issue or topic you are discussion may not be immediately apparently (many dissertations require more subtlety than your opinion written out in type 12 font), but you should always keep in mind the direction from which you come. What are you trying to say with your writing? What is the point of this dissertation? What will your thesis accomplish, solely by existing? Why are you going into management in the first place? Consider all these questions. Comb for biases.
- Get help. No matter how good a writer you may be, you will never catch every single instance of bias. This is why finding someone else who is also working on a management dissertation or similar work that can help you is essential. Pick someone with radically different views but a similar background of education. If you have time for several instances of peer editing, choose a second editor who is vastly different from you in as many respects as possible. No one knows more about management than the Taco Bell janitor. No one.
And so you might have to take a unique approach to writing your dissertation. Just because you have to maintain yourself within the proffered structure of your thesis, does not mean you don’t have the opportunity to bring to light your specific topic and examine it in depth. You have a chance to apply your concepts and ideas to a plan that can be put to practical application.
