How to Go About Writing a University Dissertation

Sometimes university students find that though they are well equipped to start with their university dissertations, they are unable to organize their ideas. They have a lot to write but do not know where to begin. Here are some guidelines to make the process of writing university dissertations smoother.

Topic selection

This is one of the first steps towards writing your university dissertation. The selection of your topic will determine the argument you choose to defend. It is natural to get confused at this stage, as you suddenly feel overwhelmed by a riot of topics appealing to you. Try reading dissertations that have already been submitted. Choose a topic that you strongly feel about.

Dissertation committee

A dissertation committee will comprise of experts from your field of study. They will be judging whether your university dissertation is good enough to be approved or not. Members from this committee may be from other fields too, depending on the rules of your university. You have to choose the committee members, within these rules. Your dissertation advisor will also be a part of this committee.

Dissertation proposal

Based on the topic you have selected, you will have to write a dissertation proposal and submit it to your dissertation committee. Depending on how convincing you are in your dissertation proposal, you will be allowed to go ahead with the research area you have selected. Take a look at an example of a research proposal format.

Research

Once your proposal is accepted, you will start your research by gathering data, using several methodologies and analysing the gathered data to support your argument.

Contents of a university dissertation

Your gathered material and the research results that you arrive at have to be written within standards specified for writing university dissertations. A typical dissertation paper will comprise of the following:
• Title page
• Abstract
• Table of contents
• Introduction
• Literature summary
• Methods chapter
• Analysis of data
• Results and discussions
• Conclusion
• Bibliography

Stylization

Institutes always have standards of presenting university dissertations. Some even follow their own in-house standards. Style guides catering to a specific field also exist. Additionally, there might be national and international styles. You will have to make sure that your dissertation follows all the rules recommended by your institute. Your content may be brilliant, but non-adherence to rules might lead to a rejection.

Defense

After you have approval from your dissertation advisor, you will proceed to the defense stage. During this stage, the dissertation committee members will orally cross question you regarding your work. You will have to defend your argument in front of the dissertation committee.

Submission

After the committee has approved you at the ‘defense’ stage and you have verified that your dissertation is void of typos, formatting issues and grammatical errors, you can submit your university dissertation.
